France increases security preparations ahead of planned nationwide protests.

France has placed security forces on the maximum level of vigilance ahead of nationwide demonstrations scheduled for October 24, as authorities prepare for possible unrest linked to the rising cost of living and fuel prices.

Jean-Didier Berger, France’s minister delegate to the Interior Ministry, announced the heightened alert on Thursday during an interview with BFMTV, according to Anadolu Ajansi.

“We are at a maximum level of vigilance,” Berger said, referring to the planned demonstrations.

He also warned that the government had not ruled out banning further gatherings or cultural and sporting events if authorities considered such measures necessary.

France Increases Security Deployment

Berger said the deployment of security personnel on Saturday would be 20 per cent higher than the number mobilised for the October 17 demonstrations.

Authorities have also cancelled leave for some security personnel and recalled officers who had planned to take time off.

The deployment will include Sentinelle forces, alongside specialist units such as the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN) and the Research and Intervention Brigade (RAID).

Berger said the government would continue assessing the situation in the coming days and weeks, leaving open the possibility of additional restrictions if needed.

Protests Over Living Costs and Fuel Prices

Demonstrations took place across France on October 17, drawing Yellow Vest protesters and students who raised concerns about the cost of living and fuel prices.

Authorities reported damage to businesses and public buildings during the protests. Some cities also introduced localised curfews in response to the unrest.

The Yellow Vest movement first emerged in France in 2018, driven largely by opposition to fuel tax increases and broader concerns about household expenses.

Further nationwide demonstrations are scheduled for October 24 as security agencies prepare for another day of protests.

Meanwhile, trade unions have called for a nationwide strike and protest day on November 5, signalling the possibility of further public mobilisation over economic concerns.
