A senior officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), holding the rank of Assistant Commander, has been accused of corruption, abuse of office, obstruction of justice and unexplained wealth in a petition submitted to the commission’s chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
The allegations were contained in a six-page petition filed by the Network for Justice Association of Nigeria (NJAN) on July 9, 2026, and obtained by PRNigeria. The group listed 21 allegations against the unnamed officer, although the claims have not been independently verified.
EFCC Officer Accused of Abuse of Office
According to the petition, the officer allegedly uses his claimed closeness to the EFCC leadership to influence decisions and bypass established procedures.
NJAN alleged that he sometimes obtained direct approvals from the commission’s chairman without following the required supervisory channels. The group also accused him of allegedly demanding up to 10 per cent of funds involved in certain petitions before investigations could begin.
Other claims in the petition included alleged unauthorised access to confidential banking information, extortion, interference in investigations and secret meetings with high-profile suspects.
The organisation further alleged that the officer negotiated unofficial settlements and offered favourable treatment to suspects in exchange for money. It also claimed that some individuals were falsely told they had been placed on security watchlists as part of alleged extortion schemes.
EFCC Petition Raises Questions Over Officer’s Wealth
NJAN also called for an investigation into the officer’s assets and lifestyle, alleging that his properties and luxury vehicles were inconsistent with his official income.
The petition cited alleged property acquisitions in Nigeria, Dubai and the United States. It also raised questions about transactions involving large sums of money and a poultry business allegedly linked to the officer.
However, PRNigeria reported that it had not independently confirmed the allegations, and the petition did not establish that the officer had been convicted or formally found guilty of any wrongdoing.
The group also alleged that the officer maintained relationships with influential political and business figures, raising concerns that such associations could interfere with his official responsibilities.

EFCC Chairman Urged to Investigate Allegations
NJAN urged Olukoyede to order an independent and comprehensive investigation into the claims. It also called for the protection of potential witnesses and the preservation of relevant financial, documentary and electronic evidence.
The group said decisive action would help strengthen public confidence in the EFCC and demonstrate that no official was above accountability.
Responding to the report, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale said the commission maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards internal corruption.
Oyewale stated that more than 40 staff members had recently been dismissed after investigations into alleged misconduct. However, he said he was not aware of the specific petition against the officer at the time of the inquiry.
The allegations remain unproven pending an official investigation and any response from the officer concerned.
