The Igbobi College Old Boys Association (ICOBA) Class ’93 on Friday donated Close Circuit Camera Television (CCTV) and a giant monitor to their alma mater.

The set, led by its chairman, Mr Babs Ademoye, in company of other executives, made the donation to celebrate its 32nd anniversary, at the school hall, in Yaba, Lagos.

Ademoye said it was a noble thing to give back to the institution that helped to mould their lives into what they were today.

“Today, with immense pride and gratitude, we gather to commemorate a significant milestone in the history of our beloved alma mater.

“Today, we celebrate the 32nd anniversary of our great set, and I am honored to be the Chairman of ICOBA ’93 Set.

“As we reflect on the past 32 years, we are reminded of the remarkable journey our school has undertaken.

“From humble beginnings to the present day, our alma mater has consistently demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and community service,” he said.

On the donation of the CCTV cameras and a giant monitor, Ademoye said they spoke to the immediate needs of the school.

“This anniversary project is a testament to the enduring spirit of our school and the strong bonds that unite us as alumni.

“Over the past years, our association has worked tirelessly to conceptualise and execute a series of initiatives aimed at celebrating our shared heritage and giving back to our alma mater.

“The projects we have undertaken include renovation and refurbishing of the school’s barbing salon, organising a career development workshop for recent graduates, and now, nstallation of the CCTV surveillance cameras,” he said.

According to him, these initiatives not only demonstrate the set’s appreciation for the education and opportunities their alma mater has provided but also reinforce their commitment to supporting the school’s continued growth and development.

“As we look to the future, I urge you all to remain engaged and involved in the life of our association.

“Let us continue to work together to promote the interests of our alma mater, support one another, and inspire future generations of students.

“I will like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the success of our anniversary project.

“Your generosity, expertise, and dedication have been invaluable, and I am proud to be part of such a vibrant and committed community.”

The Principal of Igbobi College, Rev Adedotun Akanbi, commended the Class of ’93 set, as he described them as the best among the rest, while he also used the occasion to pray for them.

“We are blessed to have these alumni of ’93 set coming to give back to the school, it has a lot of impacts.

“In terms of maintenance, the school will ensure that they do their best, the board of governors is committed to maintaining all gifts and structures the school has.

“The alumni associations are not the type that leave us to ourselves, they do periodically check back to see how we are faring.

“The board is committed to maintenance, school management and the alumni,” he said.

Akanbi added that the new and old students of the school often enjoy seamless transition, as they were all inducted as soon as they graduated from the school.

“In Igbobi College, we have zero tolerance to bullying, especially with the fact that this is a single school, male only, or for theft. We don’t entertain fights or any other misdemeanor.

“However, the CCTV cameras are very important in most formal and informal establishments, and it may be a negative thing if a school that is as big as Igbobi College is not having a CCTV to monitor the environment.

“Igbobi College sits on a large expanse of 16 hectares of land, which is quite large, so we need such infrastructure to cover the entire land,” he said.

One of the Executives of the Class ’93, Mr Chris Ogbaese, said that the project was an important venture the old students had in mind.

“It has been a project that has been in our mind and thank God it is coming to fruition today. We have thought of it and are executing it.

“For sure, it won’t be a one-off thing for the development of this school, and we will make sure that we don’t stay far from the school need and leave the legacy that they will do more than what we are doing now,” he said.

Also, Mr Olugbenga Oshunkoya, the Chairman, Planning Committee of ICOBA ’93 set restated that the donation was meant to give back to the institution that moulded the team into what they were.

“The values and discipline they instilled in us are invaluable, so giving back to the school is just a noble idea.

“The donation of the CCTV cameras is in a bid to provide security on the school premises because this is a boarding school, so the issue of security cannot be overemphasised to forestall security breaches.

“We also put in some sporting programmes to make the activities lively, because sports brings everyone together and we will be playing table tennis among ourselves and with the students.

“I promise that we will be more visible in the school in terms of providing for their needs starting from next year, we will provide for academic and sporting programmes for the current students,” he said.

Another member, Mr Kingsley Nariwoh, stressed the need for old students to come together to improve on what they had left behind.

“Our thought is that the best soil we can sow in is the human being and going back to the books, everyone of us came from the dust, so if we sow into the soil, we shall be highly rewarded.

“We are not doing this because of the reward, but the impact that the school has given to us; after leaving for about 32 years, the fond memories are still fresh. We want the school to be the best in Nigeria.

“We are now having a mix of academics and sports and that is why we are doing this. We are using our life stories to impact on these young ones, academic pursuit and sports.

“This combination can be something that can shape the lives of the students because I played cricket for the school which had a great impact on me,” he said.

As part of the ceremony, the ICOBA Class ’93 set also rewarded the best teachers, students and non-teaching staff with certificates and cash donations.

The best students were rewarded with N25,000 each from Junior Secondary School to the Senior Secondary School, while the non- teaching staff also received their respective cash donations.

The adjudged best teachers for the last session, male and female categories, were given cash gifts of N50,000 while outstanding teachers during their time in school were awarded N200,000 each.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Master Amakuge Anthony, a Senior Secondary student, said that the award given was a reward to further ensure excellence in his academic pursuit.

“I need to get to study more so as to get more awards and I will like to focus more on football and athletics,” he said.

At the end of the ceremony, the ICOBA Class ’93 set engaged in table tennis novelty match which was contested between the old students and the current students.
