From Ilesha, Osun State, to Chicago, Illinois, Bolu Apantaku is building a career that combines broadcasting, digital entertainment and entrepreneurship. At 21, the Nigerian-born media creator has earned recognition in student broadcasting and is developing an interactive music competition designed to connect Afrobeats artists with audiences around the world.

His latest project, Afrobeats Song Wars, brings together music, live streaming and audience voting. The competition reflects his interest in creating new ways for independent artists to showcase their work and engage listeners.

Early Life and Education

Born on March 2, 2005, in Lagos, Nigeria, Bolu is the son of Mr Abiodun Apantaku, a Public Affairs Specialist at the National Assembly in Abuja, and Mrs Funmilola Apantaku. His family traces its roots to Ilesha, Osun State.

After moving to the United States, he attended Chicago Math and Science Academy before graduating with honours from Niles North High School in Chicago.

He is currently completing his final year at the University of St. Francis in Illinois, where he has combined his academic studies with practical experience in broadcasting, television production and digital media.

How Athletics Shaped His Work Ethic

Before pursuing broadcasting and streaming, Bolu developed his competitive spirit through school sports.

He participated in varsity football and track and field, earning recognition as an All-Conference football player and a Top Athlete finalist. He also distinguished himself in several track and field events.

The experience helped him develop discipline, teamwork and the ability to perform under pressure. These qualities have also influenced his approach to live broadcasting and content production.

Building an Award-Winning Broadcasting Career

At the University of St. Francis, Bolu expanded his media skills by taking part in different stages of television production.

His experience includes directing live broadcasts, operating television control rooms, editing video content and presenting news programmes.

His work has earned recognition from the Illinois College Press Association (ICPA), including awards and distinctions in several categories.

His reported achievements include:

  • Third Place, Statewide – Short-Form Video Production: Recognition for his work in editing, pacing and digital storytelling.
  • Best TV News Anchor: An award recognising his presentation skills and on-air performance.
  • Best Short-Form Video Production: Further recognition for his creative video work.
  • Best Video Editor: Recognition for his post-production and visual storytelling skills.
  • President, College TV Club: A leadership role involving production teams, multi-camera broadcasts and live television programming.

These experiences have helped him build a broad understanding of media production, from presenting stories to managing the technical work behind a broadcast.

Marketing, Digital Strategy and Campus Leadership

Beyond television, Bolu has also taken on leadership responsibilities in student organisations and sports communications.

He served as Vice President of Marketing for the Student Government Association, where he worked on promotional campaigns, campus branding and student engagement.

He also worked as a Social Media Strategist for the Student Government Association and Black Student Association, managing digital campaigns across platforms.

In addition, he served as Social Media Manager for the university’s football programme. The role involved producing real-time sports content for students, alumni and supporters.

These positions gave him practical experience in branding, online audience development and digital community management.

The Bolu Show and the Creation of Afrobeats Song Wars

As he approaches graduation, Bolu is bringing his broadcasting and marketing experience together through The Bolu Show, a media platform under the HKG Network.

Its flagship project, Afrobeats Song Wars, is designed as a tournament-style live music competition.

The format allows emerging artists to compete against one another using original music, while viewers vote during the live sessions. This approach gives audiences an active role in the competition rather than leaving them as passive viewers.

The project also creates an opportunity for independent musicians to introduce their songs to new listeners and build a following through digital entertainment.

For Bolu, the concept connects his Nigerian background with Chicago’s diverse music and creative scene. It also reflects his wider ambition to use streaming technology to bring artists and audiences from different locations together.

Bolu Apantaku’s Vision for a Global Media Brand

Bolu sees graduation as the start of another phase in his career. His ambitions extend beyond live streaming to a wider media business involving broadcasting, short-form content, online commerce, event production and entertainment.

Through The Bolu Show and Afrobeats Song Wars, he hopes to develop a platform that combines creative production with audience participation and opportunities for emerging talent.

His experience so far spans presenting, directing, editing, marketing and managing digital content. He is now applying those skills to building a media brand with an international outlook.

From his family roots in Ilesha, Osun State, to his education and media work in Chicago, Bolu Apantaku’s journey reflects his ambition to connect Nigerian creativity with a wider global audience.
