Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing his administration of eroding democratic principles in Nigeria.

In a statement released by his media office, Atiku condemned the recent actions of the Department of State Services (DSS) against former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, describing the move as politically driven and unlawful. According to him, security operatives sealed properties linked to Malami despite the matter being pending in court.

Atiku characterized the development as an abuse of power, alleging that state institutions are being used to intimidate opposition figures. He warned that such actions signal a broader attempt to suppress dissent and weaken democratic structures in the country.

The former vice president further claimed that the current administration is pursuing a strategy to silence critics and consolidate political dominance ahead of the 2027 elections. He argued that prominent figures are being targeted to pressure them into aligning with the ruling party.

Drawing comparisons to past authoritarian periods in Nigeria, Atiku cautioned that the country risks drifting toward a one-party system if opposition voices continue to face repression. He stressed that democracy thrives on competition and freedom of choice, warning that any effort to stifle these principles could undermine the nation’s political future.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to remain vigilant, stating that the health of the country’s democracy depends on the protection of opposition rights and the independence of state institutions.
