Ambazonian Rebels Raze Houses In C/River Community

The so-called Ambazonia rebels from South West Cameroon who invaded the mountainous community of Belegete in Obanliku LGA of Cross River State have fled.  The paramount ruler of Belegete, HRM Uchua Amos, said in an interview, that the insurgents burnt houses in the community before fleeing.

The Ambazonian rebels, who infiltrated the Belegete community on December 5, reportedly abducted over 40 Cross River indigenes, killed the clan head, Chief Francis Okweshi, and occupied the place for two weeks.

The monarch said before fleeing, the rebels burnt some houses and caused the people to scamper away for their safety.

He added that the displaced people are yet to return because the insurgents had destroyed many of their houses.

The paramount ruler said he had reached out to the army and police commanders nearby, but the security agents were unable to access the community because of its very difficult topography.

“It takes over six hours from the famous Obudu Mountain Resort to get there. It is not motorable in any way. So, it was very difficult for our men to descend to the place to rescue our people,” he said.

The monarch appealed for government presence in the Belegete community to deter incessant invasions of armed insurgents from Cameroon.
