Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has arrived in Niger State with a Federal Government delegation following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Tunji-Ojo is expected to meet with Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, as well as families of the deceased and other stakeholders, following the incident that has raised concerns and prompted investigations.
The 37 miners deaths in Niger occurred after the suspects were arrested during enforcement operations against alleged illegal mining activities in parts of the state on September 15 and 16, 2026.
The Federal Government delegation is expected to express condolences to the families and people of Niger State while seeking further information on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered a full and transparent investigation to determine what happened and establish responsibility where necessary.
As part of the response, the Niger State Commandant of the NSCDC, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, has been directed to step aside pending the conclusion of the investigation.
The NSCDC leadership has also set up a panel to examine the circumstances surrounding the 37 miners deaths in Niger and determine how the detainees died while in custody.
Authorities have yet to officially establish the cause of death, with the investigation still ongoing.
The Federal Government has appealed to residents and other members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigative process to run its course.
It assured Nigerians that the miners deaths in Niger will be thoroughly investigated and that relevant findings will guide further action by the authorities.
