Recently, El-Rufai made a significant move by defecting from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He candidly expressed that he left the APC and remarked that they could “eat the party if it is food.”
El-Rufai conveyed his disappointment with the leadership of the APC, emphasizing that the party had deviated from the progressive ideals upon which it was originally founded. He attributed the misalignment between his personal values and the current direction of the APC as the primary reason for his decision to join the SDP.
In a recent interview with BBC Hausa Service, El-Rufai explained: “It would have been easier for me if they had expelled me. I’ve said many times that APC would be my last political party. What’s next? I left their party and challenged them to eat it if it’s food.” He further clarified, “Had they expelled me, they would have spared me the trouble of explaining why I left. As I’ve stated, I didn’t leave the APC; it’s the APC that left me.”
