In response to a user on X, Arukwe clarified that taking care of one’s partner and spending money on them does not make someone a “simp,” but rather a responsible man. He stated, “Taking care of your woman and spending money on her doesn’t make you a simp. It only makes you a responsible man.”
While the movie has received praise, particularly from women, for depicting an ideal way men should treat their partners, some male viewers have criticized it for exaggerating the extent of a man’s responsibilities to his partner. Arukwe, who portrayed Odogwu Obiora, a wealthy Igbo man who lavishly spends on his partner Chioma (played by Bambam), has faced backlash for allegedly portraying Igbo men as “simps.” However, a user on X, Himp2million, responded, “Anambra men are not simps. Your movie is liked only by ladies who have always had the illusion of an odogwu who’ll spend his last dime on them.”
