Tinubu Dismisses One-Party State Allegations, Reaffirms APC’s Openness to Opposition.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has firmly rejected claims that his administration is attempting to steer Nigeria toward a one-party state, describing such speculation as a “terrible rumour” without basis in fact.
Speaking during a special joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday to commemorate Democracy Day, the President reiterated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) remains committed to democratic values and welcomes healthy political competition.
“I plead for your indulgence so that I may put a terrible rumour to bed,” Tinubu said in a direct address to lawmakers. “To those who ring the alarm that the APC is intent on a one-party state, I offer you a most personal promise. While your alarm may be as a result of your panic, it rings in error.”
He continued, “At no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, and at no future juncture shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria. I have never attempted to alter any political party registration with INEC.”
The President emphasized that the APC is not afraid of internal or external competition, and remains open to members of other parties who wish to join its ranks.
“You are all welcome to the progressive fold. Nobody should close the door,” he said. “Political parties fearful of members leaving may be better served by examining their internal processes and affairs, rather than fearfully conjuring up demons that do not exist.”
Tinubu’s remarks come amid increased political defections and accusations from opposition parties that the ruling APC is attempting to consolidate power by weakening the opposition. However, the President maintained that such assertions are misguided and do not reflect the democratic spirit of his administration.
