Popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has reportedly died at the age of 40 following a prolonged battle with cancer.

The heartbreaking news, which surfaced on Tuesday evening, has thrown the Nigerian entertainment industry and fans across social media into mourning. Sources close to the actor revealed that he had been quietly battling the illness away from public attention for some time.

Concerns about the actor’s wellbeing had grown in recent months due to his noticeable absence from public events and social media platforms. His last significant online activity was recorded in late 2024, sparking widespread speculation among followers who continued to express concern and prayers for his recovery.

Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke, the actor studied Law at the University of Calabar and also earned a diploma in Mass Communication. He first gained national recognition after emerging as the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition, a breakthrough that paved the way for his successful career in Nollywood.

Over the years, Ekubo established himself as one of the industry’s most admired actors, celebrated for his charisma, versatility, and stylish screen presence. His role in the 2012 movie In the Cupboard earned him the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award at the Best of Nollywood Awards.

Aside from his acting achievements, his personal life often attracted public attention, particularly his relationship with American-based model Fancy Acholonu. Their engagement in 2021 generated excitement among fans, with preparations underway for their highly publicized wedding tagged #FalexxForever.

However, the planned marriage was abruptly cancelled just months before the ceremony, leaving many fans shocked. The relationship later became the subject of public conversations after Acholonu made revelations about challenges they experienced during their time together.

Since reports of his passing emerged, colleagues, friends, and fans have continued to pay tribute to the late actor, remembering him for his warmth, vibrant personality, and contributions to the African film industry.
