The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has warned citizens to prepare for three days of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across various parts of the country, E247Mag reports.
In its latest weather advisory, NiMET forecasted moderate to heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms from Wednesday to Friday, particularly affecting states in the North Central, South East, and South West regions. The agency specifically highlighted flash flood risks in low-lying areas of Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.
Director-General Prof. Mansur Matazu urged residents in flood-prone areas to take precautionary measures, advising against traveling during heavy downpours and recommending proper drainage clearance. “We expect rainfall intensities of 50-100mm in some areas, which could lead to surface runoff and flash floods,” Matazu stated.
The weather alert comes as several states continue to grapple with the aftermath of recent floods that displaced thousands. Emergency agencies, including NEMA and SEMA, have been placed on standby to respond to potential flood-related incidents.
Farmers have been advised to harvest mature crops while motorists received warnings about possible reduced visibility and slippery roads. Aviation authorities have also been notified about potential flight disruptions during the period.
E247Mag reports that NiMET will provide hourly updates through its social media platforms and mobile app to keep Nigerians informed about weather developments.
