Carl Dean, an asphalt paver who first met his future wife, Dolly Parton, outside a Nashville laundromat over six decades ago, died on Monday at the age of 82. His passing was announced by Parton on Instagram early on March 4, 2025, revealing that he had passed away the day before.

Born to Virginia Bates Dean, known as Ginny, and Edgar Henry Dean, Carl grew up in East Ridge, Tennessee. While Parton rose to fame as a country music legend, he led a quiet life running his own asphalt-paving business.

Despite being married to a world-renowned star, Mr. Dean preferred to remain out of the limelight. In a 2020 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Parton shared that her husband never had an interest in the public eye. “It’s just not who he is,” she explained. “He’s a quiet, reserved person, and he figured that if he ever got out there, he’d never get a minute’s peace — and he was right.”

The couple’s story began in 1964, when they met outside the WishyWashy Laundromat in Nashville, shortly after Parton moved to the city. She was 18, and Dean was 21. They married two years later, on Memorial Day in 1966, in a private ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia, attended only by Parton’s mother, a preacher, and his wife. In 2016, the couple marked their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows, an occasion that inspired Parton’s album Pure & Simple.
