One of Nigeria’s most talented musicians, Asake, renowned for blending Yoruba and street slang into his music, recently released “Military,” a track where he boldly declares that English is not his first language (“Oyinbo ko oro l’enu mi”).

In a viral video, Portable criticized Asake’s command of English, saying, “You’re so dumb; you’re rich but still can’t speak good English.” This comment resonates in Asake’s new single, where he addresses the ongoing critique of his decision to sing in Yoruba and the scrutiny of his English proficiency.

Following his appearance at the 67th Grammy Awards, where he was nominated for Best African Music Performance, Asake surprised fans with the release of “Military.” This song dropped after his Grammy appearance. Speaking to the press on the red carpet, Asake shared that he was in his “military era,” where he felt free to do as he pleased. The gifted artist, who attended the ceremony dressed in full military camouflage, symbolized his bold and unapologetic approach.
