Akpabio Denies Sexual Harassment Allegations Amid Senate Tensions

ANN ON CAM

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has firmly denied the sexual harassment allegations brought against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central), which are currently before a competent court.

During Wednesday’s session, Akpabio emphasized that he has always upheld a strong respect for women, citing that he was recognized as Nigeria’s most gender-friendly governor during his tenure. He urged the public to await the court’s ruling before making any premature conclusions.

Akpabio’s denial comes amidst a backdrop of political tension and public discourse, with some individuals calling for his resignation, while others continue to defend his integrity.

Meanwhile, a petition filed by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan stirred controversy in the Senate chamber during Wednesday’s plenary. Chief Whip of the Senate, Mohammed Monguno, called for the rejection of the petition, arguing that the matter of sexual harassment is already before the courts. He further stressed that any departure from the Senate’s Standing Rules would only invite disorder and chaos.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, in response, clarified that the ongoing court case pertains to defamation of her character by one of the Senate President’s aides, who allegedly posted comments in plenary insinuating that she was inappropriately dressed.

In turn, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, citing Order 40(4) of the Senate Standing Rules, aligned with Chief Whip Monguno’s stance. He urged the Senate to dismiss the petition, stating that petitions authored and signed by lawmakers cannot be accepted by the chamber. Bamidele then called for a closed session to address the matter, but Akpabio, noting the presence of UK parliamentarians in the gallery, insisted the plenary should continue.

However, the Senate ultimately referred the petition to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct for further review.

In addition to the parliamentary developments, legal action has been taken, with Akpabio’s wife, Unoma Akpabio, filing a defamation suit against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan. She seeks substantial damages for alleged violations of her fundamental rights and defamation.
