AFRI-CIRD condemns spate of insecurity in Kano, tasks govt on adopting tech-based solutions

The African Centre for Innovative Research and Development, AFRI-CIRD, has expressed worries over the recent rising of insecurity across some communities within Kano metropolis.

The Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of the Kano-based think-tank, Mohammed Bello, in a statement issued to newsmen, emphasized that, the time is ripe for the government to take advantage of the opportunities offered by Artificial Intelligence, AI, tools and tech solutions to tackle insecurity.

According to Mr. Bello, integrating technology will boos efficiency of security agencies leading to the overall success in their operations.

The CEO has equally advocated for a multi stakeholders’ approach in containing insecurity within the state and the country at large.

The statement reads in full below:

“Kano State, lately has been experiencing a troubling increase in the incidences of thuggery known in the Hausa language as ‘Daba’. This is particularly perpetrated by youths, leading to a growing sense of insecurity within the state. The alleged gruesome attacks by the thugs (yan-daba) recently on innocent citizens in pockets of areas in the state including at ‘Dorayi’ are scary and worrisome.

“The African Centre for Innovative Research and Development (AFRI-CIRD) is deeply concerned about the impact of these unfortunate activities on the safety and well-being of the citizens of the affected areas and is calling on the government to take urgent action to address this pressing issue.

“The Centre recognizes the need for a comprehensive and innovative approach to address the rising incidences of thuggery (daba) in the state. In light of this, AFRI-CIRD is advocating for the exploration of technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) to consolidate policing efforts and effectively address the rising incidence of thuggery (daba) in the state.

“The utilization of artificial intelligence in policing has the potential to revolutionize law enforcement and enhance the capacity of security agencies to prevent, detect, and respond to criminal activities. By leveraging AI tools such as those for predictive analytics, facial recognition technology, natural language processing, video surveillance and analysis, and autonomous drones, law enforcement agencies can significantly improve their ability to identify and apprehend individuals involved in thuggery (daba) and other criminal activities, thereby fostering a safer and more secure environment for all residents of Kano State.

“AFRI-CIRD calls for increased collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society organizations (CSOs) to support the integration of artificial intelligence in policing efforts.

“The Centre recognizes that the deployment of artificial intelligence in policing can enhance the security landscape of Kano State and create a safer environment for all. This integration will not only make policing more efficient and effective but also provide opportunities for innovative solutions that can address the rising incidences of thuggery (Yan-daba) in the state.

“The Centre strongly believes that the use of artificial intelligence in policing efforts will play a significant role in achieving these goals. Therefore, the organization is urging all stakeholders to come together and advocate for the integration of artificial intelligence in policing efforts in Kano state.”
