The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised fresh concerns over what it described as the growing politicisation of law enforcement agencies following an alleged attempt to detain former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, at Abuja’s airport.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where security personnel were said to have approached El-Rufai shortly after his arrival. Eyewitness accounts claimed that armed operatives attempted to escort him away, triggering tension at the airport. However, details surrounding the circumstances of the attempted action remain unclear.
In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC questioned the legality of the move, particularly the reported absence of an arrest warrant at the scene. The party stressed that while it supports lawful accountability, any enforcement action must strictly follow constitutional procedures.
The development has added to the simmering political atmosphere, with the ADC arguing that the episode reflects a broader pattern of what it termed uneven enforcement under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The party alleged that opposition figures appear to face heightened scrutiny, while politicians who align with the ruling party are treated more leniently despite pending allegations.
According to the ADC, such perceptions—whether accurate or not—risk eroding public trust in Nigeria’s justice system. The party maintained that democratic institutions must operate impartially and avoid actions that could be interpreted as politically motivated.
Reaffirming its commitment to accountability and the rule of law, the ADC called on security agencies to demonstrate transparency and professionalism in carrying out their duties. It warned that political disputes should be resolved through electoral processes rather than through measures that could be viewed as intimidation.
As of press time, there had been no official statement from security authorities detailing the reasons behind the attempted arrest or clarifying whether any formal charges we’re involved.
