The Lagos Area Unit of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has raised concerns over alleged harassment of Muslim students during the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Lagos State. In a statement released to the press on Friday, the society accused officials of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) of confiscating hijabs from female candidates at various exam centers, including Caleb University in Ikorodu.
According to the statement by the Amir (President) of MSSN Lagos, Kamoldeen Abiona, the society received troubling reports from multiple UTME centers across the state. The incidents reportedly began on Thursday, the first day of the examination, and have caused significant distress among affected students.
The MSSN particularly condemned the actions at Caleb University, a Christian-owned institution, where students were allegedly forced to remove their hijabs before being allowed to sit for the exam.
