The Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; his predecessor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa; and the entire structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday.
Governor Oborevwori had earlier tendered his resignation from the PDP in a letter submitted to the party’s state secretariat, marking the formal end of his affiliation with the party before announcing his defection to the APC.
Former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, reacted to the development in a personally signed statement released on Friday.
Addressing the situation, Abubakar stated: “I have been inundated with inquiries from concerned Nigerians who are eager to know my stance on the recent political realignments, especially the defection of some PDP members to the ruling party.
“Let me be clear: in a democracy, freedom of association and expression are not privileges — they are fundamental rights.”
He also responded to criticisms following his visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari, emphasizing that political maturity requires engagement across party lines.
