Yeni Kuti, Segun Sowunmi Clash Over Visit to President Tinubu

There was a heated exchange over the weekend between media personality Yeni Kuti and Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following Sowunmi’s visit to President Bola Tinubu in Lagos.

Sowunmi, who served as the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar—the PDP’s presidential candidate during the 2023 general election—has long been known as a vocal critic of President Tinubu. His recent visit to the president’s residence has sparked reactions and raised questions about his political stance.

Yeni Kuti, a prominent figure in the Nigerian media landscape and daughter of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, confronted Sowunmi on her program, questioning his motives.

“You’ve had a lot of criticism for the president, now your tune seems to have changed,” Kuti remarked. “So when is your own move? When are you leaving the PDP to join the APC?”

Sowunmi, appearing visibly irritated, responded, “Although I cannot see who is asking those questions, I didn’t come to your programme so you can try to be cheeky with me. Stop that.”

The exchange quickly escalated in tone, with Kuti retorting, “I can’t be cheeky with you because I’m sure that I’m older than you.”

Realizing the tension, Sowunmi softened his tone, saying, “Oh sister oo! My Aunty! I take that back. Please don’t be angry.”

The interaction has since stirred conversation online, with many Nigerians debating the implications of Sowunmi’s visit to Tinubu, and whether it signals a shift in his political allegiance.
