President Bola Tinubu has officially appointed and decorated Olatunji Ridwan Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in a ceremony held today at the State House in Abuja. This significant event marks a pivotal moment in the leadership transition of the Nigeria Police Force, reflecting the President’s confidence in Disu’s ability to guide the Force through its ongoing security challenges.

Disu arrived at the Presidential Villa at 2:50 p.m., signaling the finalization of a swift and important succession process that followed the resignation of the former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down for personal family reasons, as confirmed in a statement by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu combines a rich academic background with extensive law enforcement experience. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University, alongside two Master’s degrees—one in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University and another in Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology from Lagos State University.

Disu began his career in the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police, after training at the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State. Over the years, he has earned a reputation for his strategic thinking and leadership in operational command, serving in key roles across the country.

Notably, Disu has served as Commissioner of Police in both Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory. He has also led critical units, such as the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, which are renowned for tackling high-profile issues such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and organized crime.

Before his appointment as Acting IGP, Disu was serving as Assistant Inspector-General of Police, overseeing the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, a position that deals with complex criminal investigations.

Disu takes the helm of the Nigeria Police Force at a time of heightened security concerns, including rising violent crime, cyber threats, and regional conflicts. His extensive experience in intelligence-based policing and tactical operations positions him well to navigate these evolving challenges, balancing law enforcement with the need for reform.

The appointment signals a continuity of professional policing while highlighting the administration’s focus on operational efficiency, intelligence-led strategies, and public accountability. Disu’s ascent from Cadet ASP to Acting IGP embodies a new generation of police leadership, one shaped by both field experience and academic expertise, reinforcing the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to progress in the face of complex national security issues.
