The Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building, ravaged by fire on December 24th, 2025. In lieu of this the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the demolition of the building.

The Governor has also warned residents of that area that the building is unsafe and they should stay away from it.

In a report via X, Mr Sanwo-olu stated eight people died in the fire, five of them have been identified while three are yet to be identified.

His words,

“No business or unauthorized activity should be taking place there. The area remains unsafe, and only first responders are permitted on the site.

“Emergency teams continue to work carefully through the rubble, particularly at the rear of the building, to ensure no one remains trapped”.

“Following a full structural review, the GNI building will be demolished using the safest possible methods. Some surrounding buildings must also be removed. While these are difficult decisions, we must prioritize the safety of lives above all else”.
