The Niger State Police Command has arrested nine suspects over alleged rape and sexual assault of minors in different parts of the state. One additional suspect was arrested for an unnatural offence involving a 12-year-old boy.
The arrests were made in February following separate complaints reported in Minna, Mokwa, Chanchaga, Kpakungu and Kontagora.
Police investigations reveal that the victims, mostly young girls between the ages of three and 13, were allegedly lured by the suspects and sexually assaulted in their neighbourhoods. In one case, a suspect was caught in the act. In another, a suspect has already been charged to court and remanded in a correctional facility.
All other suspects are currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department and will be charged to court upon completion of investigations. The victims are receiving medical attention and necessary support.
The Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, strongly condemned the incidents and assured the public of thorough investigation and diligent prosecution of offenders.
He urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant, monitor their children closely, and report suspicious behaviour promptly.
The Police Command also reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant agencies and stakeholders to combat rape and sexual abuse, and to ensure justice for victims.
