Enough Is Enough: Wike Signals End to Rivers Rift After Tinubu Steps In

The long-running political drama in Rivers State may finally be heading for its closing scene. Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the bitter standoff between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly could be over — thanks to what he described as a decisive intervention by President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday after touring ongoing FCT projects, Wike sounded confident, even relieved, that the crisis had reached a turning point.

“By the grace of God, this will be the last time Mr. President will have to wade into this matter,” he said. “And this will be the last time Rivers people will hear of this kind of discord.”

Wike didn’t mince words about the weight of the president’s involvement. According to him, Tinubu’s position as the country’s leader carries moral authority that cannot be ignored.

“The president is the father of the nation. When a father speaks, his children must listen and do what is necessary to guarantee peace and progress,” Wike stated.

His remarks followed Monday’s high-level meeting at the Presidential Villa, where President Tinubu summoned both Wike and Governor Fubara in a bid to calm escalating tensions that had pushed the state to the brink.

The Rivers State House of Assembly widely believed to be loyal to Wike — had recently initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, intensifying an already volatile power struggle.

Now, Wike says both sides understand what is expected of them.

“The House of Assembly will carry out its responsibilities, and I believe the governor will also do what is required to make sure this peace lasts,” he said.

Wike insists that stability is now the priority, stressing that Rivers State must move forward.

“The most important thing is for Rivers State to progress. We are grateful to Mr. President for his tireless commitment to helping us reach this understanding,” he added.

But the big question remains: Is this truly the end of the political showdown in Rivers State or just another chapter in a battle that refuses to fade?
