The Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended a 26-year-old man identified as Udeme Monday Stephen, who is believed to have been involved in the attempted assassination of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and other political figures in Benin, Edo State.
On February 24, Peter Obi, former Edo State Governor Chief John Oyegun, and several members of the opposition All Democratic Congress (ADC) narrowly escaped death when gunmen opened fire during a meeting in Benin. The attack left many in the political sphere shaken, but fortunately, no one was seriously harmed.
Soon after the attack, a social media account under the name “Udeme Monday Stephen” took to X (formerly Twitter) to boast about the incident, even issuing a chilling warning that Obi wouldn’t be so lucky in the future.
Stephen wrote, “We warned Obi not to come to Edo State. He thought it was just talk. He’s lucky he made it out alive, but next time, there will be no escape.” He further threatened that Obi’s safety was in jeopardy in other states as well, particularly in Rivers State, where Stephen claimed his men would “handle” Obi. The post quickly sparked concern among security agencies, prompting an immediate investigation.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, the DSS launched a swift and thorough inquiry, employing forensic technology to track down the suspect. Their efforts led to the identification of Stephen, who works as a teacher at Jessica High School in Eliozu, Rivers State. Security sources emphasized that the DSS acted decisively upon receiving intelligence and that forensic analysis pointed to Stephen as the prime suspect.
The DSS has confirmed that Stephen is now in custody and will face charges related to the attack and subsequent threats. The security agency highlighted its commitment to investigating all credible threats to national security, regardless of political affiliation or regional background.
As the investigation continues, political and security analysts are closely monitoring the case, with many calling for increased protection for political figures in light of rising threats. Meanwhile, the DSS has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and security during the ongoing electoral period.
This arrest marks another step in the country’s broader efforts to address political violence and protect public figures from threats aimed at disrupting democratic processes.
