The Delta State Government has strongly denounced alleged incidents of harassment and sexual assault involving women during the Ozoro Festival, labeling the acts as inhumane and intolerable.

In a statement released on Friday, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, urged law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.

He stressed that no individual or group should exploit cultural celebrations as a cover for criminal behavior, adding that perpetrators must face justice.

Aniagwu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of all residents, especially women and other vulnerable groups. He also called on community leaders and festival organisers to strengthen security arrangements at such events to prevent similar occurrences.

The state government reiterated its firm stance against gender-based violence, warning that offenders would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The reaction follows the circulation of disturbing videos and reports allegedly showing women being assaulted during a traditional gathering in Ozoro. The claims have triggered public outrage, with many criticising what they see as a pattern of excusing violence under cultural pretences.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, described the reports as deeply troubling and disgraceful. He confirmed that investigations are ongoing, although no arrests had been made at the time of filing this report.
