During a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Dele Farotimi shared his thoughts on the upcoming 2027 elections, describing current discussions around them as a distraction from the pressing issues facing the nation. He emphasized that while it’s important for the elections to be free, fair, and credible, the conditions under which we currently operate make meaningful electoral conversations difficult.

“If elections were to hold today and our votes truly counted,” Farotimi said, “my choice would still be Peter Gregory Obi—unless someone else steps forward with a better offering. If it’s the same lineup as last time, there’s no doubt I’ll be voting for Peter Obi.”

He added that although he hopes Obi will present bolder policy platforms, when it comes to integrity and competence, Obi remains unmatched in his view. However, Farotimi was clear that his support isn’t unconditional. “If Obi were to align with individuals whose values I fundamentally reject, that could change things. It would take something drastic for me to withdraw my support, but it’s not out of the question.”

Farotimi reiterated his belief that conversations about elections are premature given Nigeria’s current challenges. Still, he expressed hope that Obi would take a stronger stance and refine his strategies in preparation for the next general election.
