Yoruba Youths Slam Impeachment Call Against President Tinubu
In a statement released on Sunday, YYSA National President, Olalekan Hammed, dismissed the allegations as lacking merit, arguing that President Tinubu committed no impeachable offence by referring to Mr. Gilbert Chagoury, Chairman of the Chagoury Group, as a partner in the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.
The Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association (YYSA), the apex body representing Yoruba youths, has condemned a call for President Bola Tinubu’s impeachment by a faction of the pan-Yoruba group Afenifere, led by Oba Oladipo Olaitan, describing the move as “despicable” and politically motivated.
He further cited the Chagoury Group’s track record, highlighting its successful execution of landmark projects like the Lagos Atlantic City as clear evidence of its capacity to deliver on large-scale infrastructure developments.
“Awarding a contract to a capable company does not make the president self-serving,” Hammed said. “Calling for his impeachment simply because he referred to Chagoury as a partner is nothing but a despicable and condemnable act.”
According to the YYSA, the impeachment call is not only unwarranted but also undermines efforts to improve national infrastructure and economic development. “President Tinubu is known for prioritizing competence and is committed to infrastructural development that can improve the economy and enhance the quality of life for Nigerians,” Hammed noted.
The association urged Yoruba leaders to rise above political differences and focus on unity and national progress. “This is a time for Yoruba leaders to speak with one voice and reject unfounded, divisive allegations”.
Hammed emphasized that awarding contracts to competent professionals is not unlawful and should not be misconstrued. “It is not unlawful for a president or governor to award contracts to a company owned by a professional with a proven record of competence and integrity,” he stated.
