According to presidential spokesman Mr. Bayo Onanuga, a lighthearted moment occurred during the installation mass of Pope Leo XIV in Rome on Sunday, when former Ekiti State governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi spotted President Bola Tinubu seated among other global leaders. He invited Labour Party presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi to join him in paying homage to the Nigerian leader — an invitation Obi accepted.
Upon reaching the President, Fayemi — a devout Catholic and Papal Knight, like Obi — broke the ice with a friendly greeting:
“Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence.”
President Tinubu, ever quick with a response, replied:
“I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.”
The witty remark drew laughter from Obi, who nodded in agreement, creating a rare and notable moment of camaraderie among the three political figures.
The mass brought together dignitaries and heads of state from around the world, with Nigeria well represented at the solemn Vatican ceremony.
