Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the influential leader of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, has passed away.
Adebanjo, a distinguished lawyer and former organizing secretary of the Action Group, was a steadfast advocate for the Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere. He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
His family confirmed his death on Friday through a statement signed by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo Adebanjo. “We will forever cherish his unwavering commitment to truth, equity, and justice. His dedication to a truly independent and progressive Nigeria was absolute, and he fought for this cause until his final breath,” the statement read.
The family also shared that consultations are ongoing with Adebanjo’s friends, associates, and various groups both within Nigeria and beyond, to finalize plans for a fitting funeral. Further details about the arrangements will be announced in due course. Adebanjo passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his home in Lekki, Lagos, at the age of 96.
A Brief History of Pa Ayo Adebanjo
Chief Adebanjo’s political journey began early, joining the struggle in 1943 as a Zikist, a follower of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. In 1951, he became a member of the youth wing of the Action Group and emerged as a protégé and political disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
