Kiddwaya Responds to Backlash Over Benue Relief Appeal: “I Genuinely Care”
Media personality and former BBNaija housemate, Kiddwaya, has addressed the wave of criticism that followed his recent appeal for donations to aid displaced families in Benue State.
In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Kiddwaya explained the intent behind his now-deleted post, which sought public contributions through the Kiddwaya Foundation. The appeal asked Nigerians to donate any amount—from ₦500 to ₦500,000—to support victims affected by the ongoing crisis in his home state.
“I’ve seen the comments. I hear the backlash,” he wrote. “I didn’t post about Benue for clout, I posted because I genuinely care. I am a Benue indigene and a proud Benue man. What’s happening there breaks my heart, and I couldn’t just look away.”
He further explained his decision to delete the post, stating: “I took the donation post down because I saw the pain and misunderstanding it caused—not because I’m ashamed of helping, but because I respect your voices, even the angry ones.”
Despite his emotional message, the original appeal drew heavy criticism online. Many users accused Kiddwaya of hypocrisy, citing his frequent displays of wealth on social media, including private jet travels, luxury vacations, and high-end lifestyle choices. Critics questioned the sincerity of his call for public support, given his affluent background.
The incident has sparked broader conversations about celebrity activism, privilege, and public perception—particularly when calls for humanitarian support come from figures often associated with opulence.
As of now, Kiddwaya has not confirmed whether the donation campaign will resume or be restructured, but he emphasized that his commitment to helping his community remains unwavering.
