Toke Makinwa Opens Up About Her Evolving Views on Marriage
In a candid moment on her podcast Toke Moments, Nigerian media personality and actress Toke Makinwa shared her thoughts on the realities of independence and the evolving nature of her marital choices. Now 40, Toke revealed that if given the opportunity to become a second, third, fourth, or even fifth wife, she would seriously consider it.
Reflecting on her current stage in life, she explained, “I’m at a point where my marital options are limited. Let me tell you what the biggest thing for me is—I’m the boss everywhere, and that can be exhausting. Sometimes, you just want someone else to decide what’s for dinner. Must it always be me?”
Toke, who was previously married to businessman Maje Ayida from 2014 until their split in 2017, didn’t hold back as she questioned the modern concept of independence, especially for women. In a conversation with her guest, designer Banke Kuku, she asked, “As independent women, do you think we’ve glamorised this whole idea of independence?”
Kuku’s honest response: “Yeah. It’s tough.”
Toke went on to say, “I won’t lie, Banke. Let me be real—forget the cameras. At this point in my life, if the opportunity came to be a second, third, fourth, or even fifth wife, I’d take it.”
Ultimately, she expressed a simple yet powerful sentiment: the desire for companionship and the need for a partner to lean on every now and then.
