Twenty-two lawmakers of the Kano State House of Assembly have defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP to the All Progressives Congress, APC. This comes after the defection of the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf from the party.
The 22 lawmakers made their defection known during plenary session today. The state governor had earlier defected from the party to APC after a courtesy visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Abba tendered his resignation letter to the chairman of the Diso–Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area over the weekend.
He stated that his resignation is as a result of the “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” within the party.
The governor’s defection was emulated by out alongside 22 state lawmakers, and all 44 local government chairmen in Kano State.
Among the defectors are the Speaker of the House, Jibril Falgore (Rogo), and the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Bello Butu Butu (Tofa/Rimin Gado), Majority Leader, Lawan Hussain (Dala); the Deputy Majority Leader, Garba Shehu Fammar (Kibiya); and the Chief Whip, Muddasir Ibrahim Zawachiki (Kumbotso).
The governor’s defection has generated mixed reactions as the national leader of the NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had described Abba’ move as betrayal. He also tagged January 23 as “World Betrayal Day”.
