In a significant display of unity amid recent political tension in Rivers State, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Saturday, attended the funeral of his uncle, Elder Temple Omezurike Onuoha, held in his hometown of Rumuepirikom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State.

The burial ceremony, which drew high-profile dignitaries and political allies, turned into a moment of political symbolism as Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the embattled Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, were also present—signaling a rekindling of relationships once strained by deep political divisions.

The late Elder Onuoha, a respected community leader and patriarch of the Onuoha family, was remembered for his unwavering principles, commitment to peace, and contributions to the Rumuepirikom community. A solemn service was held in his honour, followed by tributes from family members, friends, and associates.

What made the event particularly striking, however, was the public show of harmony among the three key political figures, coming just days after a peace and reconciliation meeting convened by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja. The meeting was aimed at resolving the leadership crisis that rocked Rivers State following a fallout between Wike and Governor Fubara, leading to the suspension of several government officials.

Wike, in his brief address, thanked attendees for honoring the memory of his uncle and emphasized the importance of peace in both family and public life.

Governor Fubara was seen warmly greeting other dignitaries at the event, including his political rival Martin Amaewhule. Smiles, handshakes, and friendly conversations among the trio sent a strong message of reconciliation.

Security was tight around Rumuepirikom, with men of the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, and other operatives stationed at strategic points. Hundreds of residents and supporters thronged the streets, many of them hopeful that the renewed unity among the state’s leaders would translate into stable governance.
