The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has applauded Edo women for their roles in ensuring lasting peace and rapid development across the state, reassuring that his government will continue to give more women the opportunity to realize their fullest potentials, thereby contributing their quota to the growth and development of the state.
The governor gave the assurance when he received the executive members of the Self Discovery Empowerment Foundation, an organization that aims to build a world devoid of gender-based violence, who were on a courtesy visit at the Government House in Benin City.
The governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Osaigbovo Iyoha, commended women for the sacrifice and commitment to their roles in the development of society, appreciating those who have contributed significantly to the success of his administration.
Commending the group for their roles in empowering women and youths in the society, Obaseki noted: “We appreciate a programme of this nature, focusing on empowering women and youths in the society as Governor Godwin Obaseki is passionate about women.
“Some of the best performances of the Obaseki-led administration are by women. The SUBEB and EdoJobs are examples where women led and gave their best, leading to the development of the state.
“Whenever we have the opportunity for nomination into any political position, we ensure that women are a part of the nomination. This is to ensure that we have women representation in leadership positions, as they have contributed to the development of Edo State.”
He reassured: “Our administration cannot also forget the youths or leave them idle as they make up 70 per cent of the state.
“We will partner with you on this because we take the issue of empowering our people seriously.”
Earlier, the Country and State Director of the group, Ruth Okubole, stated: “In Edo, we had our empowerment programme, where we empowered women by setting up small scale businesses for them and trained 200 women in various skill acquisition programmes. We have also had healthcare outreach, where over 100 women and children benefited.”
