Man jailed over fake UN deal
A Borno State High Court has sentenced a man, Danladi Mohammed, to one-year imprisonment after convicting him of fraud.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, in a statement on Friday, said Mohammed was jailed following his conviction on one count of criminal misappropriation of N7.6m.
He converted proceeds of 8,000 pieces of camping lanterns, which he claimed were to be supplied to a United Nations agency.
The defendant pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned on April 25, 2023, and the matter went to trial.
In the course of the trial, the prosecuting counsel, S.O. Saka, presented three witnesses and tendered several documents, which were admitted in evidence as exhibits.
Justice Umaru Fadawu, in his judgement, convicted the defendant as charged and sentenced him to one-year imprisonment with an option of N200,000 fine.
The judge also ordered the convict to pay the total sum of N7.6m to the nominal complainant.
Should he fail to do so, the court said he would serve a five-year prison term.
