A potential disaster was averted at the Lagos Port following a fire outbreak aboard a cargo vessel during unloading operations, thanks to the swift response from emergency agencies.
According to a statement from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the agency’s Fire Service Department promptly deployed state-of-the-art firefighting equipment to the scene. NPA tugboats with firefighting capabilities tackled the blaze from the seaside, while onshore efforts were reinforced by the NPA firefighting team, the terminal’s fire crew, the Dangote Fire Team, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
The Marine Division of the NPA and LASEMA immediately activated their emergency protocols, successfully containing the blaze before it could escalate into a full-scale disaster.
While there were no casualties reported, the fire destroyed items valued at several millions of naira. The ship was reportedly laden with compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks, wooden products, tyres, and other highly flammable materials that ignited within section two of the cargo hold.
