Give More Support to Federal College of Veterinary and Medical Laboratory Technology, Vom – Group Tells FG
The Executive Director, Centre for Leadership Network Initiative (CLNI), Amb. Kanjal Awam, has urged the federal government to continue providing vital support to the Federal College of Veterinary and Medical Laboratory Technology, Vom, Plateau State.
Amb. Awam made the call in a press statement signed and made available to newsmen in Abuja today.
According to him, the critical role the institution plays in both human and animal health sectors across the region and country can never be overemphasized.
The Executive Director emphasized that sustained government support is essential for the college to maintain its high standards and deliver on its responsibilities effectively.
Meanwhile, ever since its inception, the College is renowned for its specialized training in the diagnosis of diseases that affect both animals and humans, particularly those of economic, public health, and medical significance.
The College has been at the forefront of addressing some of Nigeria’s most pressing health challenges. It plays a crucial role in the training of skilled personnel who are capable of diagnosing and managing diseases such as zoonoses (diseases transmitted from animals to humans), livestock diseases, and public health threats.
Therefore, this makes the institution indispensable, not only in terms of providing education and training but also in strengthening the country’s health security infrastructure.
“The role of the college in diagnosing animal and human diseases is pivotal in controlling and managing public health crises,” Amb. Awam stated.
“As the world faces an increasing number of pandemics and health threats, the importance of the work done by the Federal College of Veterinary and Medical Laboratory Technology cannot be overstated. The government must continue to invest in its operations, infrastructure, and research programs.”
Furthermore, Amb. Awam noted that the college’s capacity to deliver on its mandate hinges significantly on adequate funding, modern laboratory facilities, and access to cutting-edge research.
He also stressed the need for improved infrastructure, including enhanced laboratory equipment and a stronger curriculum that is responsive to the ever-evolving challenges in the fields of veterinary medicine and medical laboratory technology.
It was gathered that, the college’s output is essential to the Nigerian government’s efforts to combat diseases with potential cross-border implications. As Africa increasingly faces challenges related to zoonotic diseases, such as Lassa fever, Ebola, and bird flu, the College serves as a key player in both prevention and containment strategies.
Amb. Awam also called on the college to enhance collaborative efforts with national and international health bodies, research institutions, and veterinary organizations. These partnerships will foster an environment of knowledge exchange, research, and shared best practices, further solidifying the college’s reputation as a leader in the field.
